Police To Investigate School Collapse in East Jakarta

TEMPO Interactive, Jakarta:Police are scheduled to summon expert witnesses in connection with investigations into the collapse of a school at SDN 20 Pagi elementary school in Cipinang Besar, East Jakarta. "We are going to summon witnesses and summon construction experts to give us statements," Jakarta Police Spokesman Snr. Pol. Comr. Rikwanto Monday, June 12, 2012.
The investigation was intended to find out the strength of the building construction. "Is it true that its construction is weak or are there any other factors?" said Rikwanto.
Head of the Corruption Sub-Directorate of Jakarta Police's Special Crimes Directorate, Asst. Snr. Pol. Comr Ajie Indra Widyatmaka, has said that he had not received the case's dossier submitted by East Jakarta Police. But he confirmed that his office was handling the case. "We're handling this case," he said.
The roofs of eight halls in SDN 20 came down on Monday evening, June 4, 2012. The frame of the roofs, the ceilings and tiles fell on the teachers' hall, the school principal's office, the meeting room, and IV, IA, II and III classrooms, and the school health center.
Prior to the accident, the structure was repaired just a week ago. A sum of Rp392 million, used for the renovation, came from the regional state budget (APBD) and from the Education Ministry as proposed by the Jakarta Provincial Government.
Due to the accident, the pupils had to use classrooms by turns.
East Jakarta Police Chief, Snr. Pol. Comr. Saidal Mursalin said there were indications of corruption in this case. "We note indications of corruption," he said.The indications were characterized by three things, i.e. violation of rules, inflicting a financial loss on the state, and acts of benefiting oneself.
