TEMPO Interactive, Jakarta:Vice President Boediono has landed himself in hot water after he delivered a controversial speech at the opening of the Indonesian Mosque Council (DMI) Conference on Friday, April 27, 2012. One of the many protests came from Ali Mochtar Ngabalin, who chairs the youth chapter of the Indonesian Mosques Council.
Ali said it is not in the state's capacity to control the loud volumes of mosques' speakers, as the public can manage it on their own, without state interference,” he protested. Aside from calling out to all Muslims and mosques to tone down the volume of loudspeakers, Boediono had also pointed out that mosques should not tolerate teachings of radicalism.
“It is of our duty to safeguard the mosques so as not to fall in the hands of those who spread un-Islamic initiatives such as radicalism, fanaticsm, sectarian and hatred against other people's faith and convictions, as well as provocative suggestions that can end up in violence and terrorism,” Boediono had said. ****
