What was Anas’ Motive for Using a Fake License Plate?

TEMPO Interactive, Jakarta:Jakarta Police spokesman Sr. Comr. Rikwanto says that Anas Urbaningrum’s used a fake license plate because he did not want anyone to know his whereabouts. “He often feels like he’s being followed,” said Rikwanto on Saturday.

Officials from the Jakarta Police Traffic Directorate have met with Anas’ driver to investigate the license plate in question.

“The driver is the one who deals with the car on a daily basis. After that, we will gradually extend [the investigation] to the owner [Anas],” said Rikwanto. The spokesman added that the license plate was switched by Anas’ driver. However, Rikwanto claimed the police would proceed with the case investigation. “We will ask the owner [Anas] to use the legitimate license plate.”

Despite the fake plate, the police will not press charges against Anas because according to Rikwanto, the use of a fake license plate is not considered forgery. “Unless the vehicle papers are counterfeit,” he explained.

Rikwanto’s remarks were in contrast to Article 280 of the Traffic and Road Transportation Law, which stipulate that every motor vehicle user without a legitimate license plate from the police will be subjected to a maximum two-month jail term or a maximum fine of Rp500,000.
