BPK Suggests 15 Percent Fuel Subsidy Economization

TEMPO Interactive, Jakarta:A member of the Supreme Audit Agency (BPK), Ali Masykur Musa, said the use of gas fuel for public transportation, goods transportation and official vehicles will save 15 percent of the subsidy. “That’s equivalent to Rp18.75 trillion,” he said yesterday.
He said the economization was obtained from the fuel subsidy allocation amounting to Rp125 trillion. Meanwhile, with a Rp137-trillion subsidy, in line with the revised budget, as much as Rp20.2 trillion will be saved from these vehicles.
Ali said that if the government can implement the gas to oil fuel conversion program, there should not be a conflict over the price increase. “Therefore, we should have more gas fuel stations,” he said.
More subsidy can be saved if the government improves public transportation. In this way, vehicle owners, especially motorcycles, will use public transportations. Motorcycles use 40 billion liters of subsidized fuel. “So we can save more,” said Ali.
