Former Minister Syamsul Muarif Dies at 63

TEMPO Interactive, Jakarta:Former communications minister Syamsul Muarif died at 63 years old after suffering from brain cancer at the Singapore General Hospital yesterday morning. “He had been treated at the hospital for two weeks and three days until the doctor switched off the medical equipment,” said Nurul Arifin, a House of Representatives (DPR) member from the Golkar faction.
According to Nurul, the Golkar faction head from 1999-2001 had lived with the disease for some time. He was buried in his hometown in Kandangan, South Kalimantan. “That’s what he wanted,” said Nurul.
Syamsul was born in Kandangan on December 8, 1948. He was the Golkar Party’s deputy secretary-general from 1998-2004. He also joined the National Democrat Party and became its secretary-general from 2010-2012 and was the chairman of the National Soksi from 2005-2010.
