Sugar Imports Expected before May

TEMPO Interactive, Jakarta:The Agriculture Ministry has urged PT Perusahaan Perdagangan Indonesia to realize 240,000 tons of sugar imports by May. Plantation director-general Gamal Nasir said the sugar cane grinding season would begin next month. If the sugar imports are late, he said he would be concerned that the sugar stock for next month will not be sufficient.
Gamal said imported sugar should have entered the country since March so it could be ground to white crystal sugar. The sugar is being distributed this month for public consumption, particularly to East Indonesia.
Indonesian Sugar Council (DGI) head Suswono, said he would ask for PT PPI’s liability as the raw sugar importer this year. “If it’s postponed, PT PPI must be responsible because they had agreed to the schedule,” he said.
