Mochtar Mohammad Arrested in Bali

TEMPO Interactive, Jakarta:Suspended Bekasi Mayor Mochtar Mohammad was arrested on Wednesday at the Lula Villa in Seminyak, Bali on Wednesday morning. "We are very disappointed with the procedures of the arrest," one of his lawyers, Hiu Hindiana, said. Mochtar Muhammad had previously said that he will not respond to the Corruption Eradication Commission’s (KPK) summons before receiving a copy of the Supreme Court’s ruling. “On what grounds must he be arrested?” said Mochtar’s lawyer, Sirra Prayuna, on Tuesday.

The lawyer claimed to be in Mochtar’s house in Bekasi on Tuesday afternoon. However, Sirra refused to confirm whether Mochtar was willing to allow KPK prosecutors to execute the court’s ruling. “I’ll wait for the prosecutor and talk to him on the grounds of the execution,” said Sirra.

Mochtar Muhammad, on Oct. 11, 2011, had been acquitted by the Bandung Anti-Graft Court (Tipikor) from a corruption case involving the misuse of 2010 regional budget. KPK prosecutor then filed an appeal which the Supreme Court granted on March 7, 2012—the Supreme Court overturned the Bandung court’s ruling.
