Child Commission to Sue Tobacco Producers
Tuesday, 20 March, 2012 | 14:42 WIB
TEMPO Interactive, Jakarta:The National Commission for Child Protection plans to file a class action lawsuit against all cigarette producers that market their products in Indonesia as more children have become addicted to cigarettes.
Commission head Arist Merdeka Sirait said the commission would demand that tobacco advertisements be banned.
“Cigarette ads have been too uncontrolled and have trapped the youths,” he said yesterday. The government was also asked to limit cigarette production.
Besides banning the ads, the commission urged cigarette producers to rehabilitate children who have become active smokers. Producers must also provide health facilities to treat nicotine addictions. “So, it would not be compensation in cash,” he said.
