Bitung Named Special Economic Zone

TEMPO Interactive, Jakarta:The government has announced that Bitung will be transformed into a new special economic zone in Indonesia. The move will have a positive impact on both North Sulawesi and the national economy.

North Sulawesi deputy governor Djouhari Kansil said the target would help boost economic growth in the province. “We hope North Sulawesi’s PDRB growth will reach Rp50 trillion by 2015,” he said yesterday.

Trade Deputy Minister Bayu Krisnamurthi said the establishment of Bitung as a special economic zone was due to its strategic geographical location as it is located along a global trade route and is a center of goods and service distribution. “This is what gives it a national and international trade prospective,” he said.
