TEMPO Interactive, Jakarta:House of Representatives’ (DPR) member, Eva Kusuma Sundari, has called on the government to resolve provincial conflicts, such as the dispute over Bogor's Yasmin Church.
Eva said the Provincial Autonomy Law cites that religious, legal, monetary and security issues are the central government’s authority and cannot be left to provincial governments.
“A lack of consistency and authority from the central government can reduce the state’s power and generate anarchistic actions from many provinces,” she said.
The DPR is scheduled to hold a meeting today between the commission and the government regarding a resolution of the Taman Yasmin Church issue. The meeting will be attended by Commissions II, III and VIII as well as Home Affairs Minister Gamawan Fauzi, Coordinating Minister for Political, Justice and Security Affairs Djoko Suyanto and National Police chief, Gen. Timur Pradopo.
Eva urged the central government to instruct Bogor Mayor Diani Budiarto to obey the Supreme Court’s decision, which is supported by the Indonesian Ombudsman. “The government must prove the president’s statement, which says that the law should not be undermined by thugs,” she said.
Presidential spokesman Julian Aldrin Pasha previously said the president could not intervene in the Yasmin Church issue due to Provincial Government Law no. 32/2004.
