TEMPO Interactive, Jakarta:In 2011, the education budget was the main target of corruptors, including House of Representative members, as well as businessmen and education officials, reports Indonesia Corruption Watch (ICW).
“They easily misused the funds, such as the school operational fund and special allocation fund, for political interests,” ICW analyst Febri Hendri, said yesterday.
Based on an investigation conducted by ICW, out of 436 cases handled by the police, some 12 percent occurred in the education sector. “The rest were identified in the provincial financial, social and transportation sectors,” said Febri.
The reason many corruptors targeted the education fund is because of a significant allocation increase until 2011. Last year, the government allocated Rp248 trillion for the education sector, while in 2005, the budget was only Rp33.4 trillion.
ICW recorded that from the corruption cases in 2011, the state suffered Rp2.1 trillion in financial losses. The cases saw 1,053 suspects jailed for corruption.
