Imparsial Rejects TNI’s Voting Rights
Friday, 25 November, 2011 | 13:35 WIB
TEMPO Interactive, Jakarta:Imparsial rejects the voting rights of the Indonesian military and police, claiming their political capacity and ability to maintain unity is questionable.
“I hope the general election draft doesn’t give any space to the military and police,” Al Araf, Imparsial’s program director, said at a press conference in Jakarta yesterday.
He said that one of the reasons to reject the military and police’s involvement in the election was because Law no. 31/1997 on a Military Court had not been reformed.
Imparsial’s study found that the military and the police often use their position to favor certain candidates. “This happened in an Islamic boarding school in West Java and the Banyumas Police office in Central Java,” said Al Araf.
This condition, he said, would affect the political and security situation and harm the democratic rights of the public.
